Today, we would like to focus on the Montessori approach and especially, the development of children’s senses, thanks to a tool created by researchers: sensory bottles.
Montessori pedagogy gives children the freedom to explore. It covers different fields like order, language, movement, sensory process, etc. Tools have been developed for each field.
Create your own sensory bottles with empty plastic bottles:
Plastic bottles are filled with elements able to stimulate
vision and hearing. Children will develop competencies, while
We imagined sensory bottles, see photo below. You will just have to fill the empty bottles with colorful mixtures, able to intrigue your child.
To create sensory bottles, you will need:
- PET plastic bottles
- Plastic screw-caps
- A glue gun
- Flakes, rice, pasta, buttons, water with colouring... and imagination! Anything colorful or noisy can be used.
Whether you are following or not the Montessori education, one thing is certain: your child will really like these small plastic bottles!
Here are some tips:
- We advise you screw-cap bottles. Indeed, children will have
difficulties to open it. However, as a precaution and in order to
avoid that children ingest content of the plastic bottles, we
recommend you to stick the cap on the bottle, thanks to a glue gun.

- Good to know: choose the screw cap recommended for the small
plastic bottle to be ensured to get a hermetic plastic bottle.
- Last but not least, whether it is for small bottles or caps, plastic is preferred.
