A personalised candy jar for Halloween

Carving jack-o-lanterns, dressing up like a witch and going trick-or-treating – where do these traditions come from?

The tradition of Halloween

The word Halloween comes from old expression, “All Hallows' Eve” which means "the evening of All Saints". "Hallow" is an archaic form of the English word "holy", meaning "Saint", and "Eve" is a contraction of the word "evening".

This tradition comes from the Celtic people. Every year on October 31, the Celts celebrated the end of the harvest and the end of the long days of summer by carving turnips or beets in the shape of skulls. The turnips were designed to frighten the spirits or to illuminate the souls condemned to wander between heaven and hell, like the soul of Jack O'Lantern. In 1840, many Irish people emigrated to the United States, bringing with them their traditions and beliefs.

In North America, pumpkins, which are more common than turnips, were used in the place of turnips, and ended up replacing them completely, resulting in the tradition we know today.

The Celtic people evoked evil spirits during their celebrations, hence the ghost and vampire costumes worn by the children who celebrate Halloween today. Children also love skeleton costumes, which represent the dead who are being celebrated, and witch costumes, symbolic of the healers of the Middle Ages who were said to have evil powers.

All this has developed into the tradition of Halloween as we now know it, with children carving pumpkins during the day, and then, in the even evening, putting on their costumes and going trick-or-treating.

So remember to stock up on candy before October 31, otherwise you may be sorry!
